Discipline is not the same as punishment.
Discipline relates to improving employee performance through a process of helping the employee (at least at first) to learn so they can perform more effectively. Your goal as a manager is to bring problems and issues to the employee's attention so that the employee can correct them before they turn into major problems.
Discipline problems don't just go away. The longer you tolerate substandard work and negative behaviors, the worse that behavior usually becomes. Managers who don't discipline their employees have only themselves to blame when poor performance continues and employee moral plummets.
